Developing a good system design is central to building safe, reliable, extensible, and cost-effective products and services, but what is the system design? It is probably best to think of how we get to a system design and that will explain what it is.
The products that we work on typically have some electronic or software components. Sometimes the electronics or software might be quite simple, turning on LEDs or reading switches. To enable CE or FCC marking of electronic devices, the devices will need to be tested for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). EMC testing checks that an electronic device does not emit electromagnetic energy above a prescribed threshold and inadvertently interferes with other electronic devices. Similarly, it checks that the electronic device is not susceptible to certain levels of electromagnetic energy.
Thermal management influences product and system reliability but some thermal management techniques can impair usability or aesthetics. It is imperative that the full design team work together to develop effective thermal management.
